"But why charge us to do it?" asked Joe. "I don't mind looking after the old sheep but I don't think it's very fair we've got to pay you to do it."
Old Mrs Carpenter looked at him over the top of her rimless glasses. "Keep your mouth shut, boy! That way you sound more intelligent."
Belinda looked at Joe. "All Mrs Carpenter means is that she's making us responsible. We'll be responsible for looking after Agnes."
"That's right girl," said Mrs Carpenter. "However, I haven't kicked the bucket yet."
"And you're not going to, Mrs Carpenter. Not for a long time," said Belinda.
"We've all gotta go sometime," said Joe softly, "and she sure is old." He risked a sideways glance at Mrs Carpenter.
"Old she may be but she's not deaf," said Mrs Carpenter sharply. "I've had a good innings and I don't suppose I can postpone the inevitable all that much longer."
"I just bet you're still around to get your telegram from the Queen. She sends everyone a telegram if they get to be a hundred," said Belinda.
"Very nice too," said Mrs Carpenter, "but is it worth hanging around another eleven years, I ask myself?
