Cloudy skies and the threat of rain kept the world premiere of Nicole Kidman's film The Interpreter a low-key affair in Sydney last night.
Almost more media, security and minders than fans lined the red carpet for the event at the Sydney Opera House.
"I am so glad that they let me do it here," Kidman said on the red carpet, wearing a knee-length red cocktail dress with matching red stilettos.
"At first it was 'No, we have to premiere it at New York' and strangely enough they relented and said, 'OK'.
"If you have got the Sydney Opera House, we have to let you."
The Interpreter, also starring Sean Penn and directed by Sydney Pollack, is the first film granted permission to shoot inside the United Nations building in New York.
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan was persuaded the film would not conflict with UN values and would be seen by millions of people who could never otherwise be reached by the organisation.
"I have met him a couple of times," Kidman said of Annan.
"He is a lovely man."
Kidman plays UN interpreter Silvia Broome who overhears an assassination plot against a troubled African nation's leader and becomes a target herself.
Penn plays a secret service agent distrustful of her claims.
"You couldn't build sets like that," Kidman said of the UN.
"I really believe in the world having a place where countries can come together to talk and try to solve problems through words."
Kidman was joined by family members on the red carpet, with her aunt from Brisbane flying to Sydney for the event.
"It is very exciting," sister Antonia Kidman said.
In an earlier interview, Kidman said she and her rumoured boyfriend Steve Bing were not dating.
"No I'm not," she said when asked if she was dating the billionaire movie mogul.
But she is looking to have another child.
"I would love to have a baby next, that would be a lovely thing," Kidman, who adopted children with ex-husband Tom Cruise, said.
"I have got hormones running through my system. That is why I sit wriggling saying I want to have a baby."
When quizzed on the red carpet about the baby plans, Kidman said she wasn't pregnant.
"I have got such a big mouth," Kidman told AAP.
"I am not pregnant."
After her media commitments on the red carpet, Kidman mingled with VIP's at a special cocktail function in the Opera House lobby.
She then introduced the film to 1,200 invited guests from politics, diplomacy, entertainment and the media.
"We owe it to Nicole Kidman that she saw it that the premiere came here and we arranged for the Opera House to be made available," NSW Premier Bob Carr said.
The Interpreter opens nationally on April 14, ahead of its US release on April 22.
Following the Sydney world premiere, Kidman will attend screenings in Berlin, London and New York.
