Will Smith's former musical partner DJ Jazzy Jeff has been added to the international contingent of next month's 2003 Aotearoa Hip Hop Summit.
The musical festival already has confirmed a who's who of New Zealand hip-hop in its line-up which includes local chart-busters Mareko and Scribe.
DJ Jazzy Jeff will be playing alongside MCs Pauly Yamz and V from his Philadelphia record label A Touch of Jazz. Real name Jeff Townes, the DJ's pioneering turntable work behind Will Smith - in his Fresh Prince persona - helped to sell 10 million records and won the pair Grammys among other awards.
As Smith headed to Hollywood, Townes shifted into production work with the likes of Lil Kim, Musiq Soulchild, Little Louie Vega, and Jill Scott and recording his own albums.
Coincidentally, fellow Philadelphia hip-hoppers the Roots play in Auckland two nights before his appearance at the summit which is being held at the Aotea Centre, Auckland Town Hall and Aotea Square on Friday, October 10 and Saturday, October 11.
The other international headliner is British duo the Mixologists, a champion turntable team consisting of DJ Go and Beni G.
Among the other confirmed locals are Ill Semantics, Deceptikonz, R.E.S., Word Perfect, Fast Crew, Frontline, Insomniacs, No Artificial Flavours, 4 Corners, Hamofied, Fresh Dialects, FUSA, GND, and Aiga.
The summit will be showcasing all areas of hip-hop - DJing, MCing, street and aerosol art, and breakdancing.
The exhibition Disrupt The System will feature spray paint murals, created live on outdoor panels during the summit, and pair New Zealand painters with international aerosol artists.
The event also features the Summit 1 On 1 Invitational Breakdancing Battle with selected breakers from throughout the country competing for the top prize.
The final night will be devoted to the the 2003 New Zealand ITF (International Turntablist Federation) champs with the country's top scratch DJ going on to represent New Zealand at the World ITF finals in Germany later this year.
