Artist: Daniel Von Sturmer, born 1972
Whereabouts: Melbourne
Nominated for: The Truth Effect, 2003; exhibited at Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne; Berlin's Hamburger Bahnhof
Says the jury:
"It orchestrates simple materials in lightly wrought situations within the confines of a simple white box. Represented via video, the box becomes something more: a spacious, light-filled room, the white cube of the modern art gallery, a television studio or laboratory. What we see defies the simplicity of both origins and means, conveying to the viewer a new sense of the marvellous."
What does being nominated for the Walters mean to you, personally and professionally?
It's an honour just to be in the running with the other artists.
Tell us about The Truth Effect, and what audiences will experience.
The Truth Effect is a video installation involving a large 6m x 6m tilted plane with five small video projections. The tilted plane is a kind of extension of the picture plane, framing the cardboard and paper projection screens on its surface and intervening in the space of the gallery. The videos are all studio-based "tests" using everyday objects and materials such as rolls of tape, a plastic cup and pieces of paper.
What's the way ahead after this event?
I have a studio residency in London for three months from October but hope to be in New Zealand for the award dinner as well.
