This is a great story that gently illustrates how complicated life can be for young teenagers, even when they are loved members of a family.
Thirteen-year-old Josh lives with his dad through the week, in messy, blokish comfort.
Then dad meets Suzanne and, of course, the dynamic changes.
Josh's coming to terms with Suzanne is one part of the story, but at the same time Josh is planning on competing in a triathlon, hoping desperately to beat his arch-rival Shane.
Trouble is, Josh doesn't swim.
Why not is part of the dark psychological undercurrent of the story, and is tied up with his complicated love for his handicapped twin brother Buddy.
This story is about growing up, overcoming fears, and learning to be true to your own feelings.
Josh is a wonderful character, and V.M. Jones is a talent.
