Helen MacFarquhar (Kate Capshaw), celibate single mother and owner of a bookstore in a quaint Massachusetts town, discovers a love letter among the usual pile of bills. It's unsigned and doesn't mention any names, so Helen assumes it's meant for her eyes only.
Later her store manager, Janet (Ellen DeGeneres), finds the letter under a stack of smoke alarm manuals and decides that George (Tom Selleck), the fire chief, left it for her.
But George has been yearning for Helen, who's begun a passionate affair with Johnny (Tom Everett Scott), a student who's working in the store during his holidays. Jennifer (Julianne Nicholson), a feminist who works there, pines for Johnny. Then Helen's mother (Blythe Danner) and grandmother (Gloria Stewart) pop in. Hanging around the sidelines is Miss Scattergoods (Geraldine McEwan) ...
Capshaw was a fine actress before she took time out to raise the family with Steven Spielberg. She still is, but the material is just a little too ... well ... where is that Kleenex?
