For a moment there, the Gilles Peterson-founded Talkin Loud label was the groovy sound of young Britain.
But the moment for the acid jazz movement passed on, as did parent company Phonogram's support for its dance subsidiary, leaving no long-term career prospects for the groups here.
Still, as this 24-track double CD shows some did leave some period near-classic singles to remember them by — the Young Disciples' Apparently Nothin', Incognito's Still a Friend of Mine and Colibri and Galliano's cover of Crosby Stills and Nash's Long Time Gone among them. And the inclusion of tracks by rappers Urban Species and the politically charged Marxmen's All About Eve proves the label wasn't all forgettably breezy Brit-funk — even if that is still the main impression the balance of this leaves, a decade on.
