The film adaptation of Nick Hornby's touchstone novel ("That's me" cried 99.5 per cent of blokes who read it) gave some light relief to the Auckland Film Festival and starts in cinemas at the end of August.
In the meantime, this eclectic 15-track soundtrack offers a random wander through lead character Rob's record collection. Seems he's rather keen on the 60s artpop (two lesser-known Velvet Underground tracks and contributions from Love, the Thirteenth Floor Elevators, the Kinks). And this has some gems from contemporary left-fielders (Beta Band, Smog, Stereolab and Royal Trux) as well as the occasional giant of rock history (recent Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello's Shipbuilding and Stevie Wonder's I Believe).
There's a sore-thumb aspect to the Commitments-like cover of Let's Get It On by cast member Jack Black which might have best stayed put in the movie itself rather that disrupt this spin-off. But otherwise, a cute souvenir which might sound even better on vinyl.
