Wellingtonians releasing Jamaican-influenced tracks on a Berlin-based imprint might seem a little odd but it goes to show roots music's expanding appeal.
Kiwis Fat Freddy's Drop and integral members DJ Fitchie and Joe Dukie make two beautifully simple contributions to this progressive compilation — including the classic Hope — released on a German downbeat label without flat whites or a cut'n'colour in mind. Elsewhere the vibe is just as laidback but updated by cutting-edge production and unique vocalists.
Kabuki manages this by leaving the drum'n'bass behind and teaming up with soul man Cleveland Watkiss while eccentric German reggae vocalist Patrice features on two outstanding cuts — Jah Jah Deh Deh and Lightning Head's Bass Drum & Snare.
Like many such albums it gets a little dozy towards the end, possibly in homage to dub's pungent best friend. But this one brings the genre into the future with ease.
