Where: 23 Mt Eden Rd, Mt Eden
We came here because this was a new addition to the block at the top of Mt Eden Rd, just along from the Powerstation, but already something of a local favourite. Parking was easy. There is usually plenty of space to park at the weekend but it's also very handy to buses.
We walked in and immediately thought the owners had used a tried and true formula that will be familiar to customers of central Auckland cafes. You know the layout - a long, skinny room in neutral colours with the counter down the side, leading out to an equally rectangular concrete yard. Light, bright and easy on the eye.
The most unusual thing on the menu didn't exist. It was all pretty standard unless you count the inordinately large serving of bacon that came with the eggs royal.
We ordered the eggs royal with bacon ($18), scrambled eggs with hash cakes and spinach ($18) and eggs on toast ($10). The hash cake was crispy and tasted home-made, the eggs nicely runny and the royal, as mentioned, very generously endowed with bacon.
The service was pleasant and competent.
The coffee was worthy of the good food. We recommend if you come here you grab a spot outside under one of the shady umbrellas and take your time. But be warned, there is already a little bit of competition for tables on weekends.
Overall we thought it was a nice addition to what has become a handy cluster of food and drink shops.
