By MARGIE THOMSON
The world is a global village, but not for all, writes Sir Edmund Hillary in the foreword of this book celebrating 40 years of VSA, the organisation of which he was first president, from 1963 to 1976. In those four decades, 2009 volunteers have worked in 32 countries, helping in partnership with the people there, to develop local resources in education, health, agriculture and administration. The issues are never just practical, but automatically bring volunteers face to face with globalisation and human rights versus cultural rights, especially on issues relating to the position of women.
This stunning book is a great tribute to the organisation. Organised according to region and with chapters backgrounding 15 countries, it is a real celebration of internationalism. The gorgeous photos capture the colour and diversity of the human family; the text is highly readable and makes a terrific educational resource for schools and families.
