"Deer and deerstalking are part of New Zealanders' way of life," says Tony Orman in arguing the case for deer as part of our environment.

They are not detrimental to our ecosystem and should be managed, he says, taking issue with anti-deer policies and substituting "pest" with "public resource".

Orman is one of New Zealand's most experienced outdoor masters and conservationists - this is his 19th book - and his views deserve close consideration. Deer extermination means more than an end to deer - it means extinction of a way of life.
