Review: Russell Baillie
It's the second coming of The Superjesus, the Aussie guitar outfit fronted by Sarah McLeod, who took over songwriting duties following the departure of guitarist Chris Tennant after their 1998 debut Sumo made them contenders for the big time across the Tasman.
But for all that there's not been much change of approach in the rejigged band — fuzz guitars, occasional hard-rock riffs, McLeod pouting her way through the melancholy verses and hitting the high notes hard on the luxuriantly layered choruses.
It can all sound like a less-electronic Garbage on the likes of Secret Agent Man (not the Devo song) and Checking In, but for all its playlist-friendly hooks and production, it's a repetitive affair, only Over To You, Gravity and Second Sun rising above the filler.
