We came here because we were staying in nearby Maraetai Beach and a friend's mother had recommended this rural cafe on the way to Clevedon as a good place to brunch.
Parking was easy - there is a sizeable carpark out the front.
We walked in and immediately thought we had arrived at a winery in Hawkes Bay. We made a beeline for the outdoor tables on the grass in the sunshine, plenty with umbrellas, to make the most of the beautiful day. There is, however, plenty of seating indoors, out the front and also under a covered area out the back of the cabin, which was built in 1977.
The most unusual thing on the menu is ... well, the brunch fodder is pretty standard but the lunch menu has interesting-sounding dishes such as the Log Cabin burrito with marinated scotch fillet and a scallop and bacon salad.
We ordered the all-day Cabin breakfast with a sausage, bacon, eggs, tomatoes, toast and either hash browns or fries ($17.50) which was enormous and fairly standard; scrambled eggs and bacon on a baguette ($15.50) which we concocted from the extras menu; and the delicious and highly recommended creamy savoury mushrooms with capsicum and bacon on toast ($15.50).
The coffee was yummy and hot.
The service was young but pleasant and attentive.
We recommend if you come here you come on a day when you can enjoy that outdoor seating. The Log Cabin opens for dinner Wednesday to Saturday and we could easily imagine sitting out there with wine and a meal as the sun goes down on a summer evening.
Overall we thought it a nice place to stop before or after a trip to the Clevedon Markets or beach, and worth another visit for dinner.
