New World wines were put Downunder by a German riesling at one of Australasia's leading wine contests. A 2006 Weingut Juliusspital Iphofer Julius-Echterberg Riesling Beerenauslese, from the Franconian region east of Frankfurt, was judged world's best in the 2007 Canberra International Riesling Challenge.
"The Southern Hemisphere, particularly Australia, dominated the dry styles, with the northern hemisphere dominating the very sweet styles," chief judge Louisa Rose, from top Australian winemaker Yalumba said.
New Zealand's 2006 Allan Scott Marlborough Riesling captured Kiwi honours, named best riesling from New Zealand.
A wee dram
Drambuie has long been the liqueur lover's spirited alternative for a supper-time sip, but now it's pitching for drinkers in the new cool cocktail set. The Drambuie Libertine mixes a shot of the classic whisky-based drink with soda on ice and a generous twist of lime.

Wine not
Prenzel has a punch mixer on the market for summer. Add to lemonade, soda or wine for a refreshing drink, the Prenzel Summer Wine drink retails at $15.90 and is great cocktail base.
It mixes flavours of white wine, mango, raspberry, melon, cantaloupe and pomegranate. From bigger New World and Pak'n Save stores.
A black licorice liqueur is also new to range at $39.95 It is one of three limited edition liqueurs, including peppermint ice and pear William.
