Where: 419 Remuera Rd,
We came here because we were looking for a different cafe on the same street when we happened to pass a waitress carrying a delicious-looking corn stack to an outdoor table. We abandoned the search and sat down.
Parking would have been easy, had we known we were coming here. As it was we had a bit of a trek.
We walked in and were immediately tempted to stock up on cheese, cake and olives from the delicatessen. It is a simple set-up - basically a few tables and counter where you can order both brunch and deli food.
The most unusual thing on the menu was the corned beef hash cake with poached eggs and mustard hollandaise. We tried to imagine it and decided it was what you would get if a plate of eggs benedict married a corned beef sandwich.
We ordered eggs benedict with salmon ($15.50) and a corn fritter and salmon stack ($16.50), which arrived on long, rectangular plates. The eggs bene was heavier on the spinach and lighter on the hollandaise than usual, avoiding that heavy, greasy feeling. Even so, the generous serve of smoked salmon had me completely beaten.
The coffee was worthy of a second cup. The service was pleasant.
We recommend if you come here you try the corned beef hash cake, because we were too chicken.
Overall we thought it was a pleasant spot, with good food, good coffee and no pretensions.
