Jimmy Lim has won the Deutz Fashion Design Award for emerging talent. The 26-year-old Aucklander was one of three vying for the award. Lim and Gemeli Power of Auckland and Jodi Scott of Dunedin presented a capsule collection, competing for a prize of $3000 and a trip to the UK. Judges Trelise Cooper, Francis Hooper of World, Kate Sylvester, Tony Hart of Moontide and Claire Sullivan of Urbis magazine were looking for clothes with commercial potential.
Seeking Cinderella
Adrian Hailwood's show - running fashionably late - almost tripped at the last hurdle when shoes could not be found for a large-footed model. A helper was dispatched to the audience to round up a friend of the designer who was wearing the right fit. The pacey Hailwood show won rare support from other designers, with Karen Walker and Tanya Carlson sitting front row. Fashion Week director Pieter Stewart was also there to see daughter Anneka lead out the models who looked fabulous with turquoise-blue eye shadow and vixen red lips.
Art attack
The culture vultures were out in force at the late Monday night show by World, with guests including artist Dick Frizzell, art patron Jenny Gibbs, Dame Cheryll Sotheran of Creative New Zealand and World wearer and National MP Georgina te Heu Heu plus assorted celebs including Susan Wood, pictured with charity queen Rosie Horton (left), whose Breast Cancer Foundation was the recipient of the hireage fee the Ara Masonic Lodge diverted and matched when it was chosen as venue. The Airedale St building was a cool venue, shame tempers got a bit tetchy due to the long wait for the show to start.
Exhibitionists
The exhibit hall is full of traders hoping to catch buyers' eyes, but none so blatant as Ajay Powell of Ink'd. The underwear label is anything but undercover with its host sporting a nipple ring and skimpy white boxers with trademark tattoo-style waistband. Another eye-catcher is bag-maker Saben, whose airline-themed bags were displayed by a model in a 1950s Air New Zealand uniform.
