KEY POINTS:
We came here because I'd been when they first opened, remembered that they had an interesting menu and wanted to see if it was still good.
Parking was right outside the door and there was plenty more available in the surrounding side streets.
We walked in and immediately thought brrr ... we hope we get a table inside because that courtyard doesn't seem too appealing. But oh, never mind, look at the colourful selection of cakes and slices at the counter ...
The most unusual thing on the menu was a toss-up between the braised frijoles with a poached egg or grilled catalan sardines on five-grain bread with a soft boiled egg. Great protein boosters for a lazy Saturday morning.
We ordered smoked fish kedgeree with poached eggs ($16.50) and saffron potato hash, poached eggs, caramelised leeks, hollandaise and mushrooms ($16.50) The hash was a colourful dish and was light and fluffy. I had no idea in which form my kedgeree would come. It turned out to be similar to a fish curry risotto with a touch too much cream, but very enjoyable and rather filling.
The service was excellent, the staff went out of their way to ensure a pleasant experience. The kitchen was buzzing to up-beat lounge music, creating a cosy atmosphere on a rainy day.
The coffee was very good, hot and creamy. We loved the loose-leaf tea served in mismatched china too.
We recommend if you come here you step outside your comfort zone of the usual bacon and eggs and try some of the interesting other fare available.
Overall we thought great food, service and atmosphere. Loved the interesting combinations of ingredients and friendly staff, it was a shame we were too full to sample the counter delicacies.
