By MARGIE THOMSON
This is by far the most accessible, interesting collection of Maori myths and legends that I've ever come across: the language is evocative (thanks to Sullivan's poet's sensibility) and fun and very zesty - but he also brings an explaining element to the text, without stepping out of the voice of the mythteller, so that we understand the significance behind the stories. Bishop's illustrations are the perfect complement. Indispensable.
