First the clothes, then the decor - now Paula Ryan's expanding empire is micro-managing our appearance. The Kiwi style maven has just launched her own range of top-quality makeup, hair brushes and beauty tools (tweezers, nail scissors and the like). Get outdoors
The Headland Sculpture on the Gulf is now on, with amazing contemporary sculpture appearing along Waiheke's 2km coastal walkways. Entry to the event, which runs until February 15, is free. Line 7 have also teamed up with the event to design special edition pieces, including hats, bags and this cheery orange T-shirt. The clothing range is available from the exhibition, Line 7, the NZ Maritime Museum and the Waiheke Community Art Gallery.
Goodbye Des
Menswear designer Des Rusk has decided to shut down his label, with his spring/summer collection being the last. Rusk launched his namesake label in 2006, after working as head designer at Little Brother. He says he decided to shut down the label early last year, before the recession and retail slump really hit the local industry - but is now convinced he made the right decision. He plans to travel, and says he isn't opposed to relaunching sometime in the future. And while menswear isn't an easy sell in such a small local market, Rusk will be surely missed by the industry.
Christchurch beauty
Christchurch is set to get an injection of beauty with a new makeup school opening in Peterborough St. The school, called KSSM, is run by Kristen Stewart, who recently returned home from working as a makeup artist overseas. The school will offer courses for professional makeup artists, personal courses and private makeup sessions. For more information, visit www.kristenstewart.co.nz.
