KEY POINTS:
Blaze of glory
Opening this week in Newmarket is Blaze, a salon for trendy youths that promises potential clients it is not simply a salon, it is apparently also "an attitude". Exuberant hipsters wanting to partake of Blaze's new attitude will also enjoy interiors created by the very talented Katie Lockhart, which includes a library of books and magazines to browse and other quirky touches of decor, as well as a revolving art display in the windows and staff uniforms provided by local designer labels. Ph (09) 529 7522 for more information.
Nocturnal, glo
Meanwhile if you're into lounging about on a bearskin rug in front of the fire, dressed only in black lace, then skip this next bit. Because the latest offerings from Hey Sister are all about the cute and sportif, as they say in France. Best of the lot are the Dazzle Pony PJs and lingerie which come in bold colours anyway but literally light up at night, with glow-in-the-dark shades, and the funny Funny Pants featuring odd and interesting motifs.
Silky styles
Dunedin-based clothing company Silkbody started off making thermal-style tops and bottoms for those braving the elements. After designer Emily Cooper - she's the sister of the other Dunedin-based designer named Cooper, Tamsin - and her father discovered how well silk sleeping-bag inners worked, they went into business making clothing that also warmed, cooled and didn't get damp quickly. The thermal layers have proved a great success with sportspeople - and more recently Silkbody has expanded into more style-conscious garments. Their new "relaxed fit" includes pretty cardigans and scoop neck tops with clean, modern lines and the Silksidein line, which involves silk and wool, including a versatile cardigan that would suit any woman's wardrobe. DJ Lagerfeld
He may be the same age as your granny, but that hasn't stopped him from DJing at some of the hippest parties in town, starting up a roaming art gallery, and having a collectible doll made of - yes, you guessed it - himself. Of course, we're talking about legendary Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld. And what has the Kaiser - as he is also known - done now? At somewhere around 70 years of age, Lagerfeld has become a digital, "virtual" DJ within the massively successful computer game, Grand Theft Auto. Lagerfeld will be spinning the discs at the virtual radio station, K109 The Studio, that gamers listen to. No rest home for this virtual septuagenarian then!
