Review: Russell Baillie
Having renamed herself "Pink" to match her candyfloss-shaded tresses — and maybe her skin colour — it would seem that young Philadelphia singer Alecia Moore will be keeping up the dye-job regime for a while yet.
Her debut album is already making waves in the r'n'b world, especially as much of it is helmed by hot soul-pop producer Kevin "She'kspere" Briggs, the man whose taut studio skills made stars of Destiny's Child.
However, while Pink herself has got an effective voice, capable of both the usual r'n'b gymnastics and torch-soul balladry, it's not always served well by the material. Many of the 13 tracks can sound like a collection of other folks' best bits — TLC, Janet Jackson among them.
Still, like Kelis and others in the new breed of stroppy, crazy-haired divas, she's got an attitude to remember her by, at its best on the syncopated sass of single There You Go and the opener Split Personality. Otherwise, Pink's not quite shocking enough.
