In the third book in the Fame File series, Peter Hawes introduces young readers to infamous people from the past who were often mad and frequently bad.
As always, bad people tended to have more exciting lives than good people, usually because they had no qualms about removing anyone who got in their way.
Hawes leaves us in no doubt that Bonnie and Clyde, Blackbeard, Ned Kelly and others were essentially vicious killers. It is also fascinating to read about New Zealand's own 19th century outlaw gang - the Maungatapu Murderers.
Hawes' lively writing style combined with witty cartoon illustrations by Philip Webb make makes this book very appealing, particularly to boys. It is also a great choice for teenagers and adults who struggle with reading and prefer non-fiction.
