New Jersey singer-songwriter Pete Yorn's 2001 album Musicforthemorningafter was a ripper, a who-is-that sort of debut that still winds up in the car stereo on long drives.
This one is the inevitable disappointing follow-up. The songs aren't as memorable and there are hints that his off-kilter sound - part 80s Brit-rock and American indie with a dash of country - has been consolidated into something more radio-digestible and earnest. Still, it has its moments, like the flyaway opener Come Back Home, the creeping blues-rock of Carlos (Don't Let It Go To Your Head), and the mournful but pretty ballad Turn of the Century.
No, it's not as good as that much-recommended debut, but it does enough to show Yorn is still staking out his own position among the American singer-songwriter crowd.
