A brilliant idea this, with Marshall collecting some of our finest writers on their passion for a line, a quiet bit of water and the chance of fresh fish for dinner.
It's a fine mix of writers - some, such as Roger Hall and Greg Turner, better-known for other disciplines, some, such as Keri Hulme, who have been absent for too long. Marshall owns up to being a fly fisherman of little skill.
He writes: "The rod was my badge of office, my justification for being away from my work, or the garden, and any fish caught were a bonus to the more substantial reward of time spent by the lakes and shingle rivers of the South Island."
