Martha Holmes, a former Life magazine photographer known for her pictures of famous people including painter Jackson Pollock and film stars Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, has died aged 83.
She was one of five women photographers at the magazine during its glory decades as the United States' most popular publisher of photography.
In 1949, she photographed Pollock at work with a cigarette dangling from his mouth. The image was used on a US postage stamp in 1999 - with the cigarette airbrushed out.
