Yet another compilation which proves how redundant the term "singles" has become.
Most of these barely registered on singles charts (their biggest US "single" Don't Speak was never released as a single and charted due to airplay) and here the casual pop follower wouldn't recognise more than a few titles.
But Gwen Stefani's agonised, new-wave vocals make early hits like Just a Girl and Don't Speak still memorable.
Then add comeback tracks Hey Baby, Underneath It All and the sassy Hella Good from their Rock Steady album and a few new cuts — a cover of Talk Talk's It's My Life produced by Nellee Hooper, a Rock Steady remix — and you have a passable, 16-track collection from a band which has rarely broken new ground but has been smart in picking producers to elevate the ordinary into the engaging.
