in the film this Rohan warrior played by Hopkins expands to become a sounding board to Theoden.
"So he would turn to me and say 'Gamling this is not the end, we will ride again. And I would turn and give him a look to say 'I'm not sure I believe what you are saying but you are my king ..."
The part involved much sword-fighting and riding. He was fine with the weapon-swinging but had to have riding lessons.
"I would have to be on the right hand flank of Theoden at the head of 140 horses holding on to a bloody huge lance and having to neck-rein a giant horse named Charlie who the horse team said 'sorry he
doesn't neck-rein'. I think it added something."
