"Nothing new under the sun" goes the give-away line on Mozelee's debut EP. The Auckland band come on like an American version of the feelers, all melodic, soul-searching vocals and chunky, sonic guitars. They almost take themselves as seriously as Live.
It's a formula that works though, with catchy radio single Something Real capitalising on the 60-odd gigs they have under their belt, and their second placing at last year's Auckland final of Battle of the Bands. And it's not hard to envisage the pub crowd erupting into an emotional chorus of What About You, the EP's most uplifting, post-yardie anthem. Later the track is boiled down to its acoustic roots, exposing their knack for both clean pop hooks and tired lyrical ideas - surely we already know we're living in a "world of confusion".
Still, with their tight musicianship contributing to five heartily produced songs, Mozelee's EP hints at bigger things to come.
