By MICHELE HEWITSON
Richard Jury, the London detective who conducts his investigations with a little help from Shakespeare, John Donne, and Dr Johnson, has a love/hate affair with London. He knows its scars, the scars left over from the war which left him an orphan.
Dying cop Mickey Haggerty has a favour to ask of Jury. On the site of a bombed pub called the Blue Last, two skeletons have been found. Two babies were on the site when it was bombed. One, the child of a brewery magnate, survived. The other, the child of the nanny, didn't. Haggerty believes the nanny's child survived but their identities were switched. Grimes conjures an endearing cast of characters whose lives are lived out in the shadows of a little-known London.
