By MARGIE THOMSON
It is an amazing story: how Mark Inglis, with his friend Phil Doole, got trapped by bad weather in a tiny snowcave on Mt Cook, to be rescued badly frostbitten and starving after 13 days.
Inglis lost both legs below the knee, but went on to display such determination in the coming years that he not only won a silver medal in cycling at the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games, and enjoyed an extremely successful career in the wine industry, but this year once again climbed to the top of Mt Cook.
A photo shows a clustering of "legs for every occasion" which neatly encapsulates his considerable passion and drive: legs for bike riding, skiing, climbing ... Inspirational, and a gripping read.
