Thompson provided reggae anthems (I Love Marijuana was an early hit) and ambiguity in his message: he sang Don't Cut Off Your Dreadlocks but has always been a well-trimmed man.
He became a sought-after producer (the Roots Radics band and Freddy McGregor's Big Ship passed through his hands), was called on by Greensleeves in the UK and worked with Sly'n'Robbie.
Most tracks on this compilation were recorded at King Tubby's studio and draw on his heyday.
They are fine in a primitive way, but the real Thompson oil is on the Ride on Dreadlocks: 1975-77 Blood and Fire collection, which is essential.
