It's great that a publication as old and venerable as Landfall can emerge into the 21st century with such a strong and exciting contemporary feel, and all credit to new editor Justin Paton for the breadth of his vision.
It's a solid (yet never stolid) offering of local talent, peppered with an intriguing range of international contributions.
This issue, titled Shelter, is loosely tied to the "city" theme of the Auckland Writers' Festival, and includes an essay by Los Angeles writer and festival participant Mike Davis on disaster tourism in Hawaii, as well as essays by Emma Neale, Felicity Milburn, Damien Wilkins (on Michael King's biography of Janet Frame) and Peter Wells. There's a feature on New Zealand architecture, a generous poetry offering including works by Margaret Atwood and several New Zealand names, plus fiction, new art and reviews.
