The moon is gone, the stars are gone, but Kiwi is still out and about, for he has lost his burrow. All of Kiwi's friends are worried. "Take care, Kiwi. Kiwi beware," they warn him, for stoat is on the hunt and Kiwi is in great danger.
But Kiwi is too tired and distressed to listen to their warnings, and danger is creeping ever-closer.
This is an atmospheric night-time journey through bush. The tight narrative structure makes for good reading aloud. Clever punctuation dictates the pace of the text as Kiwi begins to tire (Shiffle ... shuffle ... shiffle ... shuffle), but is forced into a frantic dash when stoat appears (Shiffle, shuffle! Shuffle, shuffle!).
On the last page the picture provides a final reassurance to those children who might worry about the presence of stoat next time Kiwi ventures out.
