Auckland hairdresser Jennifer Morgan is delighted to have won a prestigious international competition.
Her salon Morgan & Morgan, which she runs with her hairdresser husband Steve, took top honours in the Global Salon Business Awards 2006 presented in Barcelona last month.
"I have a career of being the 'bridesmaid' as either a finalist or runner-up in Schwarzkopf Hairdresser of the year, ACG Young Achiever, and L'Oreal Colour Trophy awards. That's what makes this so fabulous - it is proof that perseverance pays off," she says.
Morgan & Morgan was selected from more than 400 salons around the world for the award, which recognises outstanding performance in working with staff and clients, productivity, entrepreneurial spirit, and marketing and promotional programmes. The competition attracts entrants from 21 countries as far afield as Iceland and Mexico.
How long have you been working as a hairdresser?
Twenty amazing years - I have been hairdressing longer than some of my staff have been alive.
Why did you decide on a career in hairdressing?
I wanted to be involved in an industry that was creative and where I could have fun at work. I love working in an environment which is all about music and fashion.
In the 80s the industry went through a really dynamic time and it was hugely fun to be involved in it. Over the years it has been the people who have kept me motivated for so long, both my clients and colleagues and now my staff.
What have been the highlights in your hairdressing career?
I have had fantastic opportunities to travel with my job to places like New York, Paris, Barcelona, Miami and London. The hairdressing community is quite international and I have made friends all over the world.
The best thing about your job?
The people I meet each day - talking to clients is definitely the best part.
The worst thing about your job?
Standing for 12 hours straight, without a break.
What cut is hot?
Creating sleek, strong shapes. The bob is back.
Is there a simple way to turn around a bad hair day?
If you wake up to a disaster and you don't have time to start from scratch, a pair of ceramic irons or a curling tong is the answer. If your hair could really do with a wash go for a messy look with movement and texture rather than straight.
What is your desert island product?
Tec Ni Art Beach Creme.
What should we never do to our hair?
Never let it lose its shine.
What's the most important thing anyone can do for their hair?
If you colour, blow wave, straighten or style your hair then you'll need regular reconditioning treatments.
