Parody or not - the band members are Flash, Vegas and Dunlop Firestone - this Wellington three-piece deliver an amusingly convincing line in ragged, twangy and dark country rock around the theme of driving and hooning. Titles include Wheels of Fire, Donuts in the Sand, Can't Get Her off My Windscreen (about her memory, not her corpse) and Wrong Turn.
The highway might not be the most original metaphor for life, but that's how it looks from their side of the wipers and this stacks up well, with country harmonies, melodramatic Gram Parsons-style ballads, a Nick Cave sensibility and those Ring of Fire guitar manoeuvres.
More melancholy reflection over steel guitar than pedal-to-the-metal rock, and the Tex-Mex You Don't Understand about the feel of the wheel ("you think it's a boy thing, baby") is a gem. Let's hope they drive through our town soon.
