As with the Back to Mine series, the Trust the DJ compilations allow DJs such as Peterson to indulge themselves by offering a sampling of their new favourite (often obscure) music. Which, come to think of it, is what they do for the night job anyway.
This one kicks off with the downbeat Appalachian fiddle-meets-Gotan accordion sound of the Tin Hat Trio, lopes off into into Stevie Wonder funk, courtesy of Yesterday's New Quintet and some retro soul-funk from Amp Fiddler, then Peven Everett oiling the dancefloor with the slippery I Can Give It. And so on into some vibraphone-backed rap (J-Live's A Charmed Life), Spanish guitar-kissed drum'n'bass lite from Flytronix, some Latin percussion stuff and other stuff from obscure sources.
It's indulgent, from all over the planet but ultimately stateless, sometimes requiring a love for slightly sleazy but unaffecting barroom soul, and at times you can almost see the light glinting off the rim of the cocktail glass while someone whispers, "It's you, lady ... "
