Twelve-year-old Lulu Baker is finding life particularly difficult.
Her mother died when she was only five and now her father has a fiance, the dreadful ex-supermodel Varaminta Le Bone.
Not only is Varaminta mean and conniving but she also has an equally dreadful son.
Just before her father's wedding day Lulu comes across a mysterious bookshop and an equally mysterious recipe book called The Apple Star.
Much to Lulu's surprise, inside the book she discovers a message from her mother and suddenly she no longer feels so lonely.
