Zora Bell Boyd can make just about anything: clothes, homewares, furniture, engagement rings.
She may have studied ancient history, biological anthropology and architectural draughting but it was when she did Unitec's BA in design that she developed an affinity for jewellery-making. Stints in architectural field and project management followed, as well as her own Grey Lynn store Sibi selling the clothes and homeware she made, but it was after some travel and a bit of meditation that she got into jewellery full-time.
She now makes one-off pieces in antique sterling silver for Ponsonby store Wunderkammer and Antonio Oli in Milan, and gold engagement rings and high-end pieces to order.
Who are your favourite fashion designers?
Ann Demeulemeester. Her designs are easy to wear, they always have detailed touches and are usually made of the highest quality fabrics. And Rei Kawakubo. Every season has something beautifully original.
What was the last item of clothing you bought?
An Ann Demeulemeester duster coat that can be buttoned front and back to become a dress. Great for winter or summer.
What's your biggest indulgence?
Diamonds - overpriced exquisite creations of nature.
Who inspires you?
Those who have overcome great tragedies - physical, mental or emotional - to go on to give unconditionally to others. Also, I am always moved by a beautiful singing voice.
Best fashion bargain?
A $5 bright red padded 1920s dressing gown I have worn as an evening coat for about 12 years.
The one rule you always dress by?
Remember my age and nothing too tight or too short.
Who does the best shoes?
Costume National. They produce comfortable heels and boots that you can wear all day and night. Wearability and style-wise they will go the distance.
What's the one thing everyone should have in their wardrobe?
A good, simple, black silk, bias-cut dress. You will be able to wear it as a dress, a slip or to bed and take it anywhere when travelling. It looks good crushed and takes up very little room.
Your favourite local shop?
Wunderkammer for two reasons: they sell my jewellery and it's the nicest space to hang out in that's not really like a shop. Visually there is something for everyone to look at.
Your favourite shop elsewhere?
Telmo Antique jewellery store in Buenos Aires. They have exceptionally amazing pieces that are rare both in design and craftsmanship. You can spend hours there.
What can't you live without?
Sleep and time in nature.
What is your beauty routine?
Cleanse and tone morning and night with Aesop and La Mer moisturiser.
Your best beauty tip?
A smile.
Whose wardrobe would you most like to raid?
Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons.
