Years ago it was bands such as Babes In Toyland, the Breeders and Throwing Muses making a racket like this. They were all-girl groups with a pop sensibility and a love of noise pulsing through their veins.
Erase Errata, a San Francisco girl trio, hark back to those glory days. Nightlife, their third album, is an unnerving listen but pleasurable, like picking a scab, with a punk dance influence and a rumbling tribal motif throughout.
Another Genius Idea From Our Government is discordant and bludgeoning pop with off-kilter brass; Dust rocks with jabs and stabs and melodic singing; and Tax Dollar is carnage. Erase Errata, unlike bands such as the Breeders, are not hung up on pop hooks, as the churning agitator of Rider and the politically charged Wasteland (In A ... ) show.
Singer/guitarist Jenny Hoyston, bassist Ellie Erickson and drummer Bianca Sparta play the living daylights out of their instruments and when they play tomorrow night at the Schooner Tavern it will be noisy. But it's a fine line between pleasure and pain. Ear-plugs anyone? Not a chance - don't be a girl.
Verdict: Brash and abrasive pop from American female trio who hit Auckland tomorrow
