Review: Russell Baillie
A solo album from Rollo of English ambient-dance outfit Faithless allows him to turn up the atmosphere and turn down the funk to largely impressive-sounding effect.
Seemingly a bit of a concept piece about surviving a traumatic childhood and being a better adult for it, the beatific mood would seem to run contrary to its themes, its generally glacial pace swerving it towards background music that's neither emotionally engaging nor lyrically or sonically imaginative.
Still, it has its moments care of various vocalists — the early Time Takes Time resembles Boy George fronting Massive Attack; the choirboy on Always Remember to Respect Your Mother Part 1 is a nice touch too, even if Part 2 proves one part too many.
And if nothing else, those awaiting the new Faithless — or Massive Attack — album should find this a likeable if unchallenging stopgap.
