Masterton singer Nik Carlson, 26, came second in NZ Idol but he might be top of the pops after his first single is released in the run-up to Christmas.
The title is under wraps, but he says it will be a cover of a pop song and not a carol or a version of Bing Crosby's White Christmas.
Carlson is also working on an album with NZ Idol musicians Eddie Rayner and Adrian Stuckey. It will feature some original songs as well as covers from the series.
