Eragon, a 15-year-old farm boy, discovers a curious blue gemstone while exploring in an infamous stretch of forest near his home. The gemstone turns out to be a dragon's egg which hatches while in Eragon's care.
The boy and the dragon quickly form a bond and only just escape death
when evil powers seek to capture them. However, Eragon's uncle is killed in the aftermath, so Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, set out for revenge.
It transpires that Eragon is the first in a new generation of Riders _ a group of legendary warriors killed by an evil king. Soon he becomes the focal point in the war between the king's forces and the resistance fighters.
This novel is a promising start to a new fantasy series from young novelist Christopher Paolini. Full of elves, dwarves, dragons and evil forces, this adventure will appeal to all those who enjoy a large fantasy epic.
