Rachel Hunter has returned from two weeks' tramping through Uganda's rainforests in search of gorillas. The 30-year-old model, actress and animal lover (she has four dogs and one ex-husband) was invited into Africa by the British-based gorilla charity Born Free.
Explaining her world view, Rachel said: "My involvement with Born Free came about after I had been planning to do a fashion shoot in Africa. I've had a huge passion for gorillas ever since I saw Gorillas In The Mist.
"Everyone told me I shouldn't be going to Uganda because there's a war going on there. But in fact it turned out to be the most amazing experience of my life and one that I think has changed my whole outlook.
'I could hear the crack of gunshots going off in the distance and that was quite terrifying. When you have children you have such an instinct for sounds, situations and the threat of violence that I began to wonder if I'd done the right thing by going there."
The gorillas were not available for comment on their reaction to the visit.
SUPER ROLE: Ben Affleck has been shoulder-tapped for the role of CIA analyst Jack Ryan after Harrison Ford said no to a third outing. Affleck would take over the role in The Sum of All Fears, pitting Ryan against terrorists who plan to start a war against Russia by setting off a nuclear bomb at the Super Bowl. Keeps the Clear and Present Danger franchise alive and, er, kicking.
LIFE TIME: A group of legendary pop songwriters named the Beatles' In My Life as the greatest song ever written. John Lennon's autobiographical song, which appeared on the 1965 Rubber Soul album, beat the Rolling Stones' Satisfaction to lead the list, compiled from top tens submitted by 20 famous songwriters, including Paul McCartney, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, legendary 50s lyricist Jerry Leiber and Burt Bacharach collaborator Hal David. Harold Arlen and E Y Harburg's Over The Rainbow, from The Wizard of Oz, was third. So, where was Stairway To Heaven?
NOT SO PHANTOM MENACE: Liam Neeson broke his pelvis after crashing into a deer while driving his 1989 Harley Davidson near his upstate New York home. The deer died from its injuries.
YOU JUST NEVER NOSE ... The grand fromage of French film, Gerard Depardieu, has undergone emergency coronary bypass surgery. The 51-year-old is expected to recover fully. So much for that Mediterranean diet, huh, Gerry?
I DIDN'T DO IT ... Teen pop sensation Britney Spears and boyband'N Sync singer Justin Timberlake are just friends and have no plans to get married, contrary to British media reports. Tabloids reported that Timberlake had popped the question two weeks ago and that Spears had accepted. The 18-year-olds were both members of the New Mickey Mouse Club before shooting to fame as recording stars.
THAT'S BAD: The owners of a pricey Beverly Hills jewellery store are sueing Michael Jackson, claiming the pop singer walked out with a one-of-a-kind, $3.15 million diamond-encrusted watch and refused to pay them. David Orgell, on exclusive Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, claims the store let Jackson take the Vacheron Constantine watch with him for a few days while he decided if he wanted to buy it. Jackson kept the watch for four months, Orgell claims, ignoring repeated invoices for payment. Eventually, the so-called King of Pop returned the timepiece with a note saying he was not interested in keeping it. By that time, Orgell claims, the watch was scratched and could not be sold as a new item.
