India Kane is an Australian journalist with a few skeletons in her own cupboard that might bear investigating.
On route to the outback town of Cooinda for a reunion with her best friend, Lauren, her car breaks down. A BMW with smoked windows swishes by without stopping to help, a crime in a part of the world where if you don't die of thirst, chances are you'll be bitten by a snake.
By the time she gets to town her friend is missing, along with a policeman. She's arrested for murder - simply, it appears, for being the new girl in town.
When she's released on bail India sets about discovering what Lauren, a crusading journalist, had been investigating. The only clues are a code scrawled on her dead friend's arm, and a mysterious epidemic, which is killing aborigines.
It's a rip-along read with a strange, tacked-on, action-adventure ending involving sharks and helicopters.
