Auckland designer Helen Jones has clocked up an impressive pedigree since graduating with a degree from Auckland University's Elam fine arts school.
She went on to study furniture design in Italy, where she gained a second degree from the European Institute of Design.
Four years with a design studio in Milan followed, working with well-known Italian manufacturers on textiles, ceramics, bathroom fittings, indoor and outdoor lighting and, of course, furniture.
In 2000 she established a consultancy, Osot Design, offering services to large-scale manufacturers, and residential and commercial clients.
How long have you been involved in design?
I have been working in design full time for 11 years.
Describe your philosophy?
That design does not exist in isolation - it is a response to a whole range of influences.
First and foremost are materials and function, but industry factors such as manufacturing capabilities, new technologies, markets and profit margins are all major considerations.
It can often be very challenging to retain the poetry of a beautiful object when one is working with so many constraints.
My one-off work is far freer in that respect, and this is why I enjoy it so much.
There is more scope for playfulness.
Is there any style you particularly dislike?
I have a real aversion to anything that is over-designed - I do not believe in design for design's sake.
For me all aspects of a product or space must have a reason, whether driven by function or material.
What is your goal as a designer?
To improve people's lives, and to encourage the appreciation of good design and the ability to discern.
My aim is to simplify rather than confuse, and to encourage the appreciation of subtlety, materials and detail.
I want people to feel good using the objects.
