By GRAHAM REID
Saxophonist Coltrane (1926-67) was a cornerstone jazz musician, most deserving of the description genius for his innovations, and whose life and music became - after the almost obligatory elixir of a heroin habit was dropped - a true spiritual quest.
Cole places Coleman back into an Afro-centric consideration of his music and his analysis of the music complete with snatches of scores is insightful, although those looking for a simple biography might flag it after the first few references to chord changes between the eighth and 10th measure of the second chorus. One for the true aficionado.
