This year, it's Noir Ceramic, a metallic effect black. If you're going to do black, this is as chic as it gets. The enamel itself has incredible staying power.

2. Jessica Custom Nail Colour Anything Goes - $21.95 for 14.8ml
Jessica Vartoughian opened a nail clinic in 1969 on Sunset Boulevard. Los Angeles and manicures go hand in hand, and Jessica the brand is the business. This intense purple is attention-grabbing to say the least. Hours of fun.

3. M.A.C Nail Lacquer Fireball - $24 for 10ml
This high-gloss formula also has UV protection and conditioners. Fireball is one hot colour - a frosted tangerine. It's non-stop cheerful and would certainly stave off the beginning of Seasonal Affective Disorder.

4. Lancome Vernis Triple Tenue 157 - $36 for 12ml
First the facts: this is a long-lasting ultra-shiny nail enamel. But the exciting thing about it is the fantastic red that's just the right side of wanton. An excellent and classic choice.

5. Manicare Hi-Shine Top Coat - $12.99 for 12ml
Right after you've done the colour part, you really do need to apply a top coat. Aside from giving a glossy finish, it does prolong the life of the colour. Besides, this has a UV-inhibitor and stops nails from yellowing. And, it's fast-drying, so you don't have to wait too long before resuming normal activities.
