New Maori portraits
The Alexander Turnbull Library has bought two magnificent portraits of Maori women painted by Gottfried Lindauer in the 1880s.
At the same auction the library bought an 1840 deed for the sale of land on Kapiti Island. It bought the items after consulting Ngati Toa rangatira, representatives of Ngati Kahungunu and Papawai Marae trustees.
One portrait is of Princess Ngahui Rangita Kaiwaho of the Wairarapa. The other is of Hinepara of the Ngati Kahungunu tribe of Taakitimu fame.
