Anyone who has ever tried to cancel a gym membership knows just how difficult some establishments can make it.
Many gyms make it quick and easy to sign up but when it comes to cancelling a membership it is typically a different story, with members often having to go through an arduous process in order to opt out.
One US man found himself in this situation after moving states and being told he couldn't cancel his membership with Planet Fitness over the phone.
Robert Scucci was informed that in order to cancel he had to send through a certified letter to the gym, which he turned into a detailed breakup letter.
"Planet Fitness wouldn't let me cancel over the phone, and required a certified letter to cancel since I live in a different state now," he wrote on Reddit, accompanied by a photo of the letter.
The letter is nothing short of a masterpiece, incorporating a number of breakup cliches from "I've changed" to "I still love you but as a friend".
"It is with deep regret, and a heavy heart that I write this letter, but I must come forth with my intentions with sincerity and honesty," the letter begins.
"Certain events in my life have put me in a different place, and while it was one of the more taxing decisions I've had to make of late, it is the right one.
"The purpose of this letter is to end my relationship with Planet Fitness."
Scucci writes: "I know I've been distant, but it's because I've changed. I have different needs now, and to be frank … you really haven't changed at all. You're still that bulky, purple and yellow building with the tootsie rolls at the counter. I don't want to change you, and it pains me to think that we were once one, but are now separate and in different places."
As is often the case when a relationship breaks down, the Scucci goes on to inform Planet Fitness that there is now another gym in his life.
"I don't want you to be jealous, or to judge me based on this decision. That is not the Planet Fitness that I know and love," he writes.
"I still love you, but more like a friend at this point. I'm sorry things couldn't have been better between us."
He ends the letter by telling Planet Fitness that he "still thinks fondly" of it, topping it off with the classic line "all good things must come to an end".
"You just keep being you, and while we will both grow, it will be into our own lives without each other," he wrote.
"I think this is for the better."
He also manages to save his wife the trouble of writing her own breakup letter by adding: "PS My wife also needs to cancel her membership."
Scucci's heartfelt letter seemed to do the trick, with a representative from Planet Fitness penning a lengthy response to their "Old Flame".
In the response the representative writes that they are "sad to see [Mr Scucci] go" but they understand that "life gets in the way sometimes".
In true cliche, breakup style, they ended the letter with the line: "You know what they say though, if you love something set it free.
"You'll come back, they always do."
We recommend keeping a copy of Scucci's letter just in case you ever find yourself in a similar position, if a note like that can't get out of a gym membership then who knows what will.
